From PBHQ, With Love

Dear PatternBased Contributors, Thank you for creating with us. With PB, we are attempting to make a radically thoughtful, helpful and communal arts label/entity. Below you will find details regarding your contributions and how we can be of service to you.

PatternBased Catalog Contributors

Your musical parts are what make the catalog what it is. Here is how we are attempting to build the most artist-friendly, artist-centric catalog possible: If you contributed to a track in any way, you are a full co-writer. If your name appears on a track, you are an even-split writer of that track and will recieve a split of any royalties (and placement fees if the track get licensed.) Also the track (via stems or OG DAW file) is open-sourced to you to do almost whatever you wish with. The one exception being that you can not release the exact same version to a distribution service like DistroKid and that has to do with the fingerprinting technology of Apple Music, Spotify et al. They simply won't let you upload the same track. You can put the track on Bandcamp, Soundcloud or those types of services and you can remix and release the track in any other way though.

Direct Royalties

If you have a DistroKid account, we can add you directly to any songs you performed on and you will receive royalties for any streaming. If you are a member of a performing rights organization like ASCAP or BMI and have an IPI number, we can also add you to the registration of any tracks you played on so that you will get any royalties generated from things like film and television. If you do not have these, we can pay you directly via check or Venmo or PayPal if and when anything generates any royalties. Finally, if the track makes money in some newer/emerging system (games, NFTs etc) we will contact you to pay you your cut.

Your PB Artist Page

You have an artist page in the catalog at https://catalog.patternbased.com/artist/firstname-lastname. We would like to potentially feature you whenever and wherever possible if you are open to that. We also respect your privacy and any notions of wanting to reduce your internet profile so we can also reduce what we show as well. Just let us know. You will be able to login in the future to reorder your featured tracks, edit your bio/image/links, change your artist name and see any licensing activity. Until then we thought it might be easier to keep the images simple, patterny and non facial for version 1.0. We hope everyone is ok with this and if you would like a different image, feel free to pick something nice from the site unsplash and send us a link.

Other ways we can support you

PatternBased and sister entity Bunny San Tachi have run an artist residency in the Mojave Desert since 2014. Unfortunately, all the residencies of 2020/2021 had to be cancelled due to the pandemic and when we re-open our HQ to artists, we are hoping it will be in southern Japan (some time in 2022). We love hosting musicians and artists so feel free to contact us regarding a residency.

We are looking to build a database of musicians and artists we can hire to perform on soundtracks, create album art, accomplish technical tasks (code, database dev, SEO etc) and other things. We are hoping to continually hire fellow freelancers as we grow. If you are interested in being considered, get in touch.

Finally, we are also happy to give you a cut or placement fee if you place the catalog's music. We have a referral system in place and can add codes and %'s tailored to your activity. We are also happy to share any information regarding what we have learned in two decades creating music and art to keep the bills paid and for creations sake. While we will continue to search for new ways to contribute to the creative world, If you ever have thoughts on how we can improve to better serve you (and better serve our planet and fellow lifeforms while doing so), please let us know.

Discounted Licensing

Finally, We are starting to reach out to entities like the Sunrise Movement and other forward thinking grass roots movements to build relationships and for potential discounts on licensing. If this doesn't align with your thinking, we'd love to know. If you know any deserving smaller budget entities looking for music along these lines, feel free to put us in the touch. At the same time, we've learned over the years that entities asking for free stuff are often disrespectful of the arts and usually make low quality content.. entities making quality things also want to pay all the artists involved fairly (go figure) so we are attempting to balance these notions as well.

Quick PB History

PatternBased was created in Kent, Ohio in the late 90's. Initially it was just a domain to stick some music up at and while that description still somewhat fits, we have added a lot of visual art and development capabilities. We have been composing an increasing number of soundtracks for shows/films/ads for entities like Netflix, Showtime, UN etc. We have been careful to always keep the rights to all our creations and have therefore built a decent catalog of licensable material. We are currently putting some genuine effort towards getting the people who have collaborated and contributed to the catalog some money/recognition in the form of freelance gigs, studio fees, licensing placement fees and royalties. We don't know if the licensing stuff will take off but if it does, we want to have everything in place (thus this page). We hope to be a resource for the people who have contributed over the years and to foster the arts in general as an attempt to contribute to this chaotic world.
